a.j. zone design creates functional decor and lighting sculpture, meticulously crafted from upcycled drum shells and primarily found materials. shells are sourced via our partnership with a boutique drum builder, the shells are salvaged excess from the drum building process. the wood segments are painstakingly milled by hand and arranged to create stunning visual patterns. an opportunity to create from waste material is an opportunity to create a more balanced planet.

each design is crafted with careful consideration to balance, color, pattern, shape, and weight ensuring a sense of calm and order amongst randomness. each piece can transform a space throughout the day by playing with shadow and light, and expanding room dimension and feel with dynamic texture.

acoustics

large scale panels incorporate foundations of high frequency acoustic diffusion design, utalizing the curved nature of shells to scatter sound waves. this helps to reduce flutter echo and keep a room feeling “alive” while reducing unwanted sonic artifacts. additional designs incorporating high density acoustic absorption foam are also available.

i work with a wide range of hardwoods: maple, walnut, cherry, ash, birch, oak, bubinga, mahogany, and more. each type of wood offers its own texture and character.
